Canyonville Community Library - May News
Welcome to May! As we embrace the warmer days ahead, let’s take this opportunity to focus on wildfire prevention and preparedness. It’s also a perfect time to educate our children about the importance of staying safe and aware, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
We encourage you to join in the fun with the “Smokey Bear Reading Challenge Bingo.” This is a great way to learn and earn fun prizes. We also suggest accompanying activities for the reading challenge to help children understand wildfire awareness:
1. Share books about wildfires and the first responders who protect us.
2. Create a family plan for responding to a wildfire, including escape routes and meeting places.
3. Explore local nature to discuss how wildfires impact ecosystems and ways to prevent them.
We also have informational brochures for anyone interested in Firewise and Emergency Preparedness.
We were honored to be recognized by Days Creek Charter School as one of its “Community Champions” for our Ready Reader Program. Thank you for supporting our school and students! The library donates books each month so students in grades K-2 have books and activities to take home to their families.
The Douglas Community Library Association makes the “Ready Reader” program possible through grant funding and other generous donations. Each month, we deliver an average of 112 books for children to bring home. This program positively impacts literacy skills among students in our community. Encouraging children to read at home for just 20 minutes daily greatly enhances literacy development.
We are excited to announce our “Summer Reading Program” lineup! We kick things off on Wednesday, June 18th, at 1 pm with the Oregon Museum of Cultural & Natural History’s “Power Play for the Planet” program. We have an exciting lineup of presenters through July 30th. See the attached flyer for more information.
The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is designed for kindergarten to high school children. Pre-K children are encouraged to participate in the "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program, which offers fun incentives. Everyone is welcome to attend our Wednesday programs at 1 p.m. If you cannot attend these programs, you can still participate in the SRP.
Early registration is recommended and will begin on Wednesday, June 4th. So, prepare to "Level Up" at the Canyonville Community Library for a summer of learning through play. This program is a reminder that libraries aren’t just quiet places filled with books; they are vibrant playgrounds of creativity and excitement! We can offer this program thanks to the support of grant funding and the generosity of supporters like you.
We have a few new faces at the library, and we would love for you to help us welcome our wonderful volunteers.
Evelyn is a youth volunteer who started in October. As a homeschooler, she enjoys gaining practical work experience and is delighted to be surrounded by books, as she is an avid reader. Evelyn has been running the “Book Nook” program for homeschooled children and is doing a fantastic job.
Bernadette recently discovered how much our local libraries depend on volunteers and learned that the Canyonville library sought additional help. She remembers how much she appreciated her local library while growing up and wanted to do her part to ensure that this resource continues to be available to people of all ages. Volunteering also provides an excellent opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and access a wide range of new and classic books.
Elisa joined us a few weeks ago. She grew up in our community and fondly recalls spending time at our library as a child. Naturally, she adores books and is eager to support our library.
We appreciate all of our volunteers. They are the heart of the library, allowing us to keep our doors open to the public. Be sure to say hello the next time you visit!
Thank you, Linda S., for providing sugar pine trees during the Forest Service's tree-planting season. We successfully distributed around 20 trees to community members. If you have any extra flowers or garden starts, we would gladly accept small donations for library patrons to purchase at a nominal price. This arrangement benefits everyone involved! It’s a win-win situation!
Are you curious about when our next book sale will take place? Mark your calendars for August during the exciting Pioneer Days celebration, where we're planning a huge event you won't want to miss! In the meantime, we have a great selection of books, DVDs, and puzzles for sale. The selection changes weekly, so check them out on your next visit.
You can make a meaningful contribution to the library in several ways! Consider shopping from our Amazon Wishlist, joining the Bottle Drop program, or registering for Fred Meyer’s Community Rewards. We also welcome donations of gently used books, DVDs, and puzzles. Visit us to discover more ways to support our library!
Thank you to local author Robert Heilman for donating his new book, “While Librarians Wept: A Library System Dies 1997-2017. This book details the political and financial chronology of the Douglas County public library closures of 2017, as seen through his eyes. His new book is in our "New to Us" section.
